868 AD
First book is printed
In China, the very first book is printed using blocks of wood carved with reverse relief. The carved blocks are dipped in ink and then placed on paper.[1]
1436
Printing press is invented
German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg is motivated by his desire for the Bible to be more accessible and he invents the printing press.[2]
1744
First children’s book is released
A Little Pretty Pocket-Book, published by John Newbery, is believed to be the first book that was made simply for pleasure reading for children.[3]
1997
First handheld e-reader is released
Rocketbook is created by Martin Eberhard and Mark Tarpenning, two avid readers. It was pitched to Amazon but turned down and then picked up by Barnes & Noble.[4]
2012
First International Book Giving Day is celebrated
In a moment of inspiration, Amy Broadmore and her son establish the idea for International Book Giving Day in cooperation with Delightful Children’s Books.[5]
